What does a Man mean in a dream
A man in your dreams can mean or represent many things and will depend upon whether you are male or female.
  • -- If you dislike or are afraid of him, he is likely representing a trait that scares you or that you see as not being feminine or “nice” because this has been ingrained within you. Positive traits such as assertiveness, courage, analytical thinking, being decisive and goal oriented, should be accepted and encouraged to thrive within you. Negative traits such as physical aggression and being argumentative may be signs that you are struggling with the acceptance of your animus.

  • Your answer(s) to the above may provide a clue as to what aspect of your Animus he may be representing. You need to accept and own this part of yourself in order to become whole. Carl Jung called this process ‘Individuation’.

  • An unknown man may also be representing someone that is known to you but you are not recognizing because his behavior has changed, or your relationship with him has changed and you no longer see him as he once was.

  • If you are Male
If you are male and you dream about a man, he may be representing yourself or some aspect of yourself.

  • If the man is known to you in waking life, ask yourself:

  • • What trait or characteristic comes to mind when you think of him? (funny, courageous, independent, angry, etc.?)

  • • What does he do for a living? (Judge, Teacher, Cook, etc?)

  • • Is there a pun on his name? (i.e., Uncle may be a pun on saying “Uncle” and giving up)

  • • What do you call him? (Nicknames are often based on character traits)

  • Your answer(s) to the above may provide a clue as to what aspect of yourself you may be projecting onto this man.

  • If the man is a stranger or unknown to you, he may be representing a shadow aspect of yourself – a positive or negative trait or characteristic that you are not consciously aware of, have repressed or denied. Ask yourself:

  • • What is he saying? It may be a message you need to hear.

  • • What is he doing? Actions speak louder than words.

  • • Where is he? Is it a familiar place – somewhere you’ve been or need to go?

  • • What is he wearing? Clothes can say a lot about a person and may be used to identify someone – what they do, what they think about themselves, their role or status in life, etc.

  • • Do you like or dislike this man?

  • -- If you like him, he is likely representing an aspect of yourself that you need to welcome and acknowledge within yourself – something positive that you are denying exists within yourself.

  • -- If you dislike or are afraid of him, he is likely representing a negative aspect of yourself that you are not seeing within yourself. It may be a negative emotion, behavior or memory that you are denying or repressing.

  • Your answer(s) to the above may provide a clue as to what aspect of yourself you may be projecting onto this unknown man.

  • An unknown man may also be representing someone that is known to you but you are not recognizing because his behavior has changed, or your relationship with him has changed and you no longer see him as he once was.

  • He may also be representing yourself because you are going through changes and your recent behavior or thoughts are not recognizable to yourself anymore.

  • If you are Female
If you are female and you dream about a man, he may be a result of your desire to be in a loving relationship and may be representing your “ideal” man or “Mr. Right.”

  • He may be representing your Animus, the masculine aspects of your psyche.

  • If the man is known to you in waking life, ask yourself:

  • • What trait or characteristic comes to mind when you think of him? (funny, courageous, independent, angry, etc.?)

  • • What does he do for a living? (Judge, Teacher, Cook, etc?)

  • If the man is a stranger or unknown to you, he may be representing an aspect of your Animus that you have not seen before or are denying. Ask yourself:

  • • What is he saying? It may be a message you need to hear.

  • • What is he doing? Actions speak louder than words.

  • • Where is he? Is it a familiar place – somewhere you’ve been or need to go?

Figures of Speech to Consider

  • • A family man. (One who is dedicated to his family.)
  • • Are you a man or mouse? (Are you afraid?)
  • • A man is known by the company he keeps. (Your friends can give you a bad reputation.)
  • • A man of his word. (He keeps his promises.)
  • • A yes man. (He says yes to everything because he’s afraid of not being liked.)
  • • A ladies’ man (A man who women love because he flirts and flatters them.)
Questions to ask yourself:
  • • Who does this man remind you of?
  • • What is this man doing?
  • • Did I see someone doing this same thing recently, maybe me?
